March to End Fossil Fuels

September 15, 2023 is a day of world wide mobilization to end fossil fuels. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is hosting a global Climate Ambition Summit in New York City. We, the Sisters of St. Francis are joining the Global Fight to End Fossil Fuels as a sponsor of the mobilization to deliver a fast and fair fossil fuel phase out. Fossil fuels are a root cause of our present climate crisis. We must take urgent action for our children and the next seven generations; we must steward the gifts of land, air, water as our creative God intended. The earth is crying out for each of us to take action now. The march will be taking place in New York City on September 17. On September 20 in New York, the UN Climate Ambition Summit will gather world leaders to commit to phasing out fossil fuels.

As part of our witness to this we will have five signs created by artists affected by climate breakdown strung as on clotheslines on our front lawn and on Washington Street near our historical marker from September 11 through September 20. We are giving other signs to some friends in Batesville to use in their yards.
CORPORATE STANCE ON CARE OF CREATION 2008
Following the example of Francis and Clare of Assisi, we the Oldenburg Franciscan Sisters and Associates humbly acknowledge that we are sisters and brothers of all creation.
With awe and gratitude, we celebrate the mystery of God’s loving presence in the Universe.
We acknowledge that we are of Earth, deeply connected to all life, ever nurtured and sustained by Earth’s abundant gifts.
Faithful to our Franciscan heritage, we assume personal and communal responsibility for honoring and protecting the natural world in our care, choosing to value all as sacred.
We commit to making Earth a priority in our decisions, to living lightly on Earth, to using resources responsibly, and to contributing to the sustainability of Earth for generations to come.

Prayer for Justice
Franciscans, Jesuits, Maryknoll – it doesn’t matter. All of us and all of you who share in our spirit are one. Let’s join the Jesuits this Friday, Sept. 25 in this beautiful prayer for justice during this Season of Creation.
The lungs of our world—the Amazon forest, Congo Basin and Asian boreal forests—are literally and figuratively on fire. Their people are crying out for justice. This Friday we will unite as a global Ignatian Family to pray for ecological conversion and action on climate change this Season of Creation. Join us live for the global Ignatian prayer vigil for the Season of Creation at 8 PM ET/ 5 PM PT September 25 in English or Spanish. |
Prayer for the Elections
God of our nation,
We ask for your guidance as we approach our election season. Send your Spirit of wisdom to enlighten our choices as we select men and women for key government roles. Give us hearts that promote the welfare of every person, regardless of race, religion, or age; make us seekers of the common good and champions of unity and peace. Through our discernment, may we look beyond political loyalties to stand with each person as brother and sister, promoting basic human rights and dignity for all. Help us to seek truth and Christian values in our candidates and in ourselves. May our vote be a testimony to the strength of our faith in Jesus Christ, who chose to identify with all humanity, especially the poor and marginalized. Recreate us, gracious God; may our country humbly assume its leadership role in this world, promoting the values of your kingdom and the reign of justice for all people everywhere, as you intended. Amen. |
The Season of Creation begins September 1st, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. It concludes October 4th, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology.
The season aligns with the fall harvest season in the northern hemisphere — a time when the state of the Earth may be on the hearts of many people. |
